HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
Welcome. This resource is here to help you build the readiness that makes feedback land, well before you’re standing in the moment that calls for it. This is not a strict script for delivering feedback better in the room. It is a way to check, in advance, whether the room can hold what you’re about to put into it.
We will audit four components: established trust, a consistent pattern of honesty, psychological safety, and role clarity.
I advise working through this resource in that order. Score honestly when asked questions. This is not a competition. It is an honest review of where you are and where you want to be, and the gaps to fill that. Score honestly for the current situation or relationship you are thinking of, not the perceived reputation.
I intend for you to walk away with a pattern across four scores, not one grade.
Plan about twenty minutes to go through this audit and have a notebook nearby.
THE FRAME
Bad feedback is rarely just a matter of word choice leveraged.
Feedback must run on infrastructure that exists before the feedback does.
I was told once to be a ‘team player.’ The words seemed simple enough and direct, but there was no infrastructure to back it up. There was zero guidance on how to achieve this, or examples to point to where I was not a ‘team player.’ I was visibly uncomfortable
The first instinct for someone giving feedback in this case is to soften the tone, perhaps cushion the criticism as a sandwich with a quick compliment, equally vague.
None of it works though, as the delivery was never the problem. Feedback is not infrastructure neutral. It runs on a track record, a safe room and a shared understanding of what’s being evaluated.
